Join the Big Screen Portsmouth for the first of three live BP Big Screens Royal Opera events. Beaming to the Big Screen live form London, we have a fantastic array of entertainment for you to enjoy this summer for free in Guildhall Square.

The Royal Ballet brings its celebrations of 70 years at the Royal Opera House to a close with a mixed programme of three of the greatest works by its Founder Choreographer Frederick Ashton. The Dream is an enchanting dance adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the breath-taking abstract work on the beauty of pure movement Symphonic Variations is Ashton’s first masterpiece, and Marguerite and Armand, inspired by the celebrated dance partnership of Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, is a tragic love story of great lyrical beauty.

Portsmouth City Council will be providing limited seating that will be made available to you on a first-come first-serve basis. So, bring a picnic and celebrate this fantastic summer series of live opera events!

Do I need a ticket to attend?
No, you do not need a ticket to attend this event.

Will seating be available on the night?
Portsmouth City Council Events Team will provide a limited number of seating which will be freely available for use.

Can I bring my own seating?
Yes of course you can. Ours are standard chairs, you may want to add a bit of extra comfort.

Can I bring a picnic?
We encourage guests to bring as much food and non-alcoholic beverages as they like.

Can I bring alcoholic beverages?
Guildhall Square is an alcohol-free zone. Any seen alcoholic beverages will be confiscated and may be poured away by security.

What are my travel options to the Big Screen Portsmouth?
The Big Screen is located in Guildhall Square, right by Portsmouth & Southsea Train station. As you exit the station, turn left and head underneath the council offices. trains will run from this station to all major UK railway stations. Check your last trains before attending this event.
Though busses will be available to bring you to our event, there may not be any to take you home afterwards. We would advise taking the Stage Coach 700 to Commercial Road, Portsmouth and then walking in the opposite direction past Portsmouth & Southsea Train Station towards the Guildhall Square.
The Isambard Brunel Car Park is the nearest to the Big Screen Portsmouth offering parking for the day from £4.65. When leaving this car park, exit left towards the Guildhall Bell tower. You'll need to walk up steps by a bridge crossing, this will take you to Guildhall Square.

What happens if it rains?
There is a chance that the event may be cancelled should the weather become too adverse. Information will keep you informed as well as hosts and security will be on hand to provide assistance.


BP Big Screens is a partnership between BP and The Royal Opera House, London that operates and pay for the broadcast transmission to the Big Screen Portsmouth. This event is hosted and presented to you for free by Portsmouth City Council and The University of Portsmouth.
